Michelle Gosselin

Bachelor of Applied Management

Michelle Gosselin juggled many responsibilities while completing her Bachelor of Applied Management with Otago Polytechnic through Capable NZ, but the challenge was worth it.

She delivered the student address on behalf of Capable NZ graduates at her recent graduation.

Michelle was born in Taumarunui and grew up in the wider Wellington. She joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 2006 where she works as a sergeant within the Supply and Logistics branch.

At her graduation ceremony she spoke about the different hats she wears.

She said she worked full-time as a sergeant while completing her studies. On top of that, she is a wife and mother and plays sport at a competitive level.

“So it’s fair to say that my 13-month journey was absolutely full-on to say the least,” she said.

“But, I did it. You did it. We did it. And we are here today because we have all sacrificed to achieve.”

Michelle said she never thought getting a bachelor or any sort of tertiary education was on the cards for her.

“That was for smart people and people that could apply themselves.”

The chance to study came about as a result of her position in the Air Force. She took the opportunity in order to further her career and be a better manager and service woman.

“Little did I know the heavy yet positive impact it would have on my personal being and development as well.”

Michelle said she used to continually doubt herself and avoided doing things because she thought she wasn’t good enough.

Her degree taught her to dig deep and get in touch with the reasons for her flawed thinking.

“Overall what I take away from this is that I now know what I’m capable of, and I have the confidence to put myself out there.”
