Cong (Eric) Geng

Master of Applied Management

China

Master of Applied Management graduate Eric Geng is enjoying life in Rotorua, where he has secured a job marketing natural New Zealand deer products.

Eric finished his study last August. He’s now a Marketing Officer with New Zealand Supreme Nature Foods.

The company aims to promote and develop natural health deer products as a supplement for good health and longevity to people around the world.

Eric says they’re committed to producing high-quality products from locally sourced materials. Their licensed premise is able to process a wide range of deer products in the specialised facilities. Their processes include drying, milling, and encapsulation.

They also provide export certification for many importing countries including Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Canada and the USA.

Eric says deer is a key industry in New Zealand. However it is not well known among locals.

“In the future our plan is to promote the deer products locally in New Zealand, especially in the Chinese market.”

The company is based in Rotorua, which Eric says is a great city.

“It’s very, very beautiful and has a lot of lakes.”

He also likes its geographical features and sporting opportunities. Currently there are many visitors in town for the summer season, which is good for business.

Eric recommends other OPAIC graduates look to New Zealand’s regions for work. They should get out and see the country and the world.

He plans to drive all the way from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island when he gets the time and money.

“New Zealand has some very special and very unique stuff that you have to experience for yourself.”

Eric’s using the theoretical and practical aspects of his OPAIC programme in his new job.

His degree mixed marketing and management, focusing on finance, information systems, capabilities for managers, project management and marketing in the digital age.

He says he also gained a huge amount of knowledge through his professional project. His research company was Air New Zealand and his project was all about how to help New Zealand-based organisations to evaluate the effectiveness of their marketing strategies in order to improve their business strategies and achieve financial sustainability in the long run.

During the project he learned how to apply frameworks and methods to the real world, and think critically. He also achieved Best Student Research Poster Presentation as a special award from OPAIC.

Eric never thought he’d return to school for his master’s degree, but now he realises it’s never too late to go back. Higher education can help people increase their knowledge and competence and solve problems at work and in life.
