Podcast episode explores Matariki in Aotearoa New Zealand
What is Matariki, and why does it matter for students in Aotearoa New Zealand?
In this special What’s Up AIC episode, we sit down with Matt Rua, Māori Advisor on campus, to learn about Matariki - the Māori New Year.
Matt explains Matariki for those who are new to New Zealand. We explore how Matariki connects to the stars, the moon, the seasons, remembrance, reflection, gratitude, whānau, and hopes for the future.
We also talk about Māori welcome practices such as pōwhiri and mihi whakatau, why students experience them during Orientation and Graduation, and how international students can respectfully bring their own cultures, values, and faiths into the kōrero.
This episode also covers AIC campus values, as well as why Māori values and te ao Māori perspectives matter in student learning and assignments here in Aotearoa.
Whether you are brand new to New Zealand or simply curious to learn more, this episode is a warm introduction to Matariki, Māori values, and belonging at AIC.
