Before joining the Learning & Teaching Development team at Otago Polytechnic in 2018, I enjoyed a varied international career as a teacher, teacher trainer and facilitator for institutions such as the European Commission, LUISS University, British Council and National Public Administration School (SNA) in Rome and London Metropolitan University and Central St Martins (University of the Arts) in London.
I graduated from Auckland University in 1990 with an LLB (Hons) and BA in English Literature and many years later combined my love of law and language with an MSc in Forensic Linguistics from Aston University, Birmingham. In my salad days I worked as a freelance dancer and choreographer in New Zealand and the U.K. and studied at the London branch of the Lee Strasberg School. I have been very fortunate to have had so many diverse experiences in my life, and teaching has provided a wonderful coat hanger to carry them on.
My role is to be responsible for developing and implementing the learning and teaching strategic direction and work plan and to ensure that Otago Polytechnic's programmes and courses are designed to best practice standards, that our academic staff have the full range of knowledge and skills needed to facilitate learner success, and that learners enjoy an outstanding experience with Otago Polytechnic.
I am editor for Scope: Learning and Teaching and a member of various polytechnic-wide committees, task groups and panels. I love the diversity my role provides. Each day there are challenges and each day there are rewards.
I joined the OP Learning and Teaching development team in September 2015. Prior to this I was a facilitator at Aoraki Polytechnic and was part of a team responsible for undertaking quality assurance.

Ibrahim is a doctoral candidate in Accounting at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). Originally from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, he completed his Bachelor of Accounting at Salahaddin University in Erbil in 2008, graduating among the top ten students in his cohort.
He began his career as an assistant accountant at the College of Basic Education, where he managed a range of accounting processes.
In 2012, Ibrahim received a financial sponsorship to pursue a Master of Professional Accounting at the University of Newcastle, Australia, graduating in 2015. After returning to Kurdistan, he completed a Methods of Teaching training programme and became an assistant lecturer at Soran University. Over the years, he has taught accounting courses at several institutions.
Ibrahim moved to New Zealand in 2020 to undertake a Master of Business (Accounting) at AUT, graduating with First Class Honours. His doctoral research explores accountability and sustainability reporting in post-conflict regions, focusing on developing an accountability framework that integrates religious and cultural dimensions to evaluate corporate sustainability reporting in Kurdistan.

More broadly, he is interested in investor attention, information processing, and decision‑making in finance. He has published on related corporate finance topics, including global policy uncertainty and cross‑border M&A, target status in emerging‑market acquisitions, and CEO compensation following M&A.

Thang emphasises learning by doing: real datasets, valuation and risk‑management problems, and collaborative projects. Students leave his classes with practical skills in financial modelling and data analysis, and a growth mindset for lifelong learning.
Having studied and worked across Vietnam, Singapore, Australia, the UK, and New Zealand, he brings a global perspective to teaching and industry collaboration. He welcomes opportunities to connect with learners and partners who share an interest in applied finance and evidence‑based decision‑making.
