Manjot Singh

Bachelor of Construction (Quantity Surveying)

India

Construction student Manjot Singh says he is honoured to be selected as a Student Representative at Building Institute Aotearoa and is excited to contribute to an organisation working to create positive change in the industry.

Manjot has been passionate about construction and the built environment since childhood. He grew up watching his Civil Engineer brother work on construction projects.

“After finishing high school, I came to New Zealand to visit my sister and eventually decided to continue my studies here,” he says.
He’s now in the second year of his bachelor’s degree and is excited to connect with the industry through his new Student Representative role.

“I’m truly honoured to represent students and be part of an organisation that’s all about growing our people and driving positive change in the built environment. I’m looking forward to engaging with the industry, sharing student perspectives, and contributing to the future of construction in Aotearoa.”

He says the organisation provides opportunities for people in construction to grow, connect, and explore within the construction industry by hosting networking events, construction site visits, award ceremonies and much more.

He’ll be responsible for sharing relevant updates and opportunities with fellow students, attending committee meetings to give feedback from a student perspective, and helping promote industry engagement through events.

“I will be closely working with the Regional Team and the Young Professionals Committee to carry out events and activities for the students,” says Manjot.

He’s looking forward to helping organise a quiz night soon, where major construction companies will come together for a fun and engaging evening and a chance to relax and connect.

Manjot is already planning his future career. He hopes to begin as a Quantity Surveyor at one of New Zealand’s well-established construction companies, and gain hands-on experience on large-scale construction projects and continue to grow professionally.

“In the long term, my goal is to work along with a close friend of mine and open a Quantity Surveying consultancy firm together, providing our services of cost management and helping in shaping the future of New Zealand’s construction.”

Manjot is grateful to OPAIC’s Construction faculty for their constant support and encouragement, especially Sabrina Arklie, Omer Altaf, and Priyanka Raina.

“Their guidance has played a key role in helping me recognise and pursue the opportunities that are shaping my journey in the construction industry.”

“I am really grateful for the opportunities so far and can’t wait to keep learning and growing in the industry. This is just the beginning of my story.”
