We hosted an engaging industry event for our construction students this month, featuring Robert Brown, the Specification Manager from Steel & Tube.
Steel & Tube has been operating in New Zealand for the last 70 years. They are the largest supplier, distributor of steel products in New Zealand. The company has been strengthening buildings, homes and landmark construction projects for over 60 years. They also manufacture and market roofing material, rainwater goods and accessories.
Robert shared his extensive knowledge of steel and composite flooring manufacturing and their applications in construction, particularly in earthquake-resistant buildings. The session was scheduled for an hour but it was so engaging that it ran over by 30 minutes.
Robert and his team prepared a presentation and brought models of composite flooring and steel for students to examine. The detailed presentation provided valuable insights for students in construction programmes, including those studying construction technology for medium and large buildings.
At the end of the presentation, Robert's team held a Q&A session where students were rewarded with lollies. Mandi Lobar was the first to win a gift pack of lollies, while Andre was thrilled to receive the big prize: a $50 Prezzy Card.
About 70 students attended the event, and the feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive. Students found the presentation both motivating and informative.
As a token of our appreciation, we presented bottles of wine to all the speakers for taking the time to share their expertise with us. The presenters expressed their willingness to return, impressed by the students' enthusiasm and interaction.
Additionally, they have arranged a site visit for our students on Friday 14 June, where 25 students will have the opportunity to gain practical experience at their facility.
Thank you to Senior Lecturer Srividya Krishnamoorthy who organised and managed the event.
Stay tuned for more updates on other exciting opportunities as we are planning another event with Steel & Tube later this year!
