Success Story: Karl Tan Ipong
Business graduate Karl Tan Ipong is using his degree to drive meaningful change. His journey reflects one of our key aims of equipping graduates to take action towards a more sustainable future.
Karl enrolled in a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Management at OPAIC in 2022. He was active in sustainability initiatives on campus during his time with us, including the Green Office Toitū.
Karl now works as the Corporate Sustainability Advisor for FUJIFILM Business Innovation New Zealand, where he has been for more than a year. He recently completed his first Greenhouse Gas Report for the company.
“As I was drafting it, I realised just how much of what I learned at OPAIC applies to my work,” he says.
Karl says it was the Green Office Toitū, led by Dani Mao, that initially piqued his curiosity about sustainability prompting him to explore the field further.
Alongside his study with us, Karl earned his Sustainable Resource Management certification from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and completed an online Sustainable Business Strategy programme through Harvard Business School.
Karl recently reached out to his lecturer, Lorraine Skelton, to thank her for the support she gave him during his studies. He said her guidance and support helped shape the skills he uses today, and he will always be thankful for that.
