Students build confidence through Conversations initiative

Our students are turning out in growing numbers for a Conversations initiative aimed at building confidence and speaking skills.

The sessions have been running on Level 3 at lunchtime each Tuesday during Study Block 1. They give students a relaxed space to practise English with peers and staff. The initiative is in response to student feedback about having limited opportunities to practise their English outside the classroom.

Each session begins with an icebreaker to get people talking. One recent activity asked participants to choose between scenarios such as giving up fruit or vegetables forever, before discussing their reasons in groups.

Students then rotate between small group tables, each led by a staff member and focused on a different topic. Discussion topics have included New Zealand life, small talk, everyday Māori language, and the New Zealand workplace.

Many Kiwi staff have volunteered to support the sessions, helping students become familiar with local accents, expressions, and slang. Learning Support Advisor and Conversations organiser Amelia Funaki says she is grateful to the “Convo Crew” for their support.

Students have responded positively to the sessions, saying they help them feel supported in their study journey and more confident using English.

Attendance grew across the six sessions in Study Block 1 through word of mouth, with students from all departments taking part. Both undergraduate and postgraduate students joined the sessions.

We celebrated our final session for the study block today with a shared lunch.

The Conversations sessions will continue next study block. Keep an eye out for sign-ups and volunteer opportunities.
