Reflecting on two years as Student Representative
Lakshita Fulara applied for the Student Representative role at our Auckland International Campus two years ago to meet new people and support students, just as she had once needed support herself.
She also wanted to be more involved in campus life and cultural events at AIC. Now in her final study block of her bachelor’s degree, Lakshita is handing over to new Student Representative Roxanne Bihag. Lakshita shares some of her favourite memories from the role below.
What have been the best parts about being Student Rep?
I really enjoyed interacting with people every day on campus, both staff and students. I also liked the challenge of handling different situations. Managing events on campus was the best part of being Student Representative - preparing for the day and thinking about the decorations so they would fit the theme.
What are you most proud of about your time in the role?
I’m proud of all the connections I made here. I’m also proud of being someone students can trust and share their problems with. I’m proud of the way I’ve turned this opportunity into a meaningful journey.
What has been the biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge for me was managing my student life and my work life. Back in my home country, I hadn’t had a part-time job. After coming to New Zealand, I knew it was important as an international student to get some work experience. Time management was very hard at the start, especially when assignment deadlines coincided with big events.
Are there any other memorable moments from your three years at AIC?
Hosting different events on campus helped me to learn about different countries and their cultures. I always had a good time engaging with students. The Christmas celebration in 2025 at AIC was the most memorable one for me because I spent almost two hours decorating Level 1, and it looked really pretty. We also created a food platter for students and staff, and I made bookmarks for all students as a Christmas gift.
You’re in your final block at AIC now. What’s next for you?
For now, I’m focusing on my internship project and looking forward to my graduation ceremony. After that, I will apply for a post-study work visa so I can work full-time.
Finally, what is your outgoing message for staff and students?
AIC has been more than just a campus for me, and over the last two years, this role has changed me in ways I never expected.
I got to work with staff who came from different cultures and backgrounds, but all showed one another the same love and support. They welcomed me with open arms, guided me, and supported me from day one. The staff here are not just my colleagues but have become family.
I really thank AIC for giving me this experience and the chance to grow my confidence and leadership skills. I also want to thank each one of our incredible Student Ambassadors for supporting fellow students and bringing positive vibes to campus. Their volunteering work never went unnoticed.
I’ll carry these memories and friendships with me long after this role. As people say, it’s never goodbye but see you soon. So yes, it’s time. This is Lakshita Fulara, your Student Representative from 2024 to 2026, signing off.
