Lecturer supports Special Olympics athletes through art exhibition

One of our academics is busy giving back to the community and helping athletes with intellectual disabilities achieve their dreams.

Principal Lecturer Lorraine Skelton has organised an art exhibition and auction to raise funds for athletes to compete in the Special Olympics National Games in Christchurch this December.

The purpose of the Special Olympics is to enrich the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through sport. Lorraine’s son, who has both autism and epilepsy, will be swimming at the December games.

The Beyond Boundaries exhibition and auction being held at the Estuary Art Gallery in Orewa is all about empowering athletes through art. The exhibition showcases a vibrant mix of drawings, paintings, photography, ceramics, and more. Each piece reflects a story of resilience and the power of inclusion.

More than 30 artists from all over the country gifted more than 250 pieces for the event. Lorraine says the effort was a great testament to New Zealand artists. The event raised $7,000 at its opening night auction. The exhibition will be open until Sunday 2 March.

Lorraine’s Hibiscus Coast and Rodney area has 24 athletes who will be attending the Special Olympics National Games. The athletes and their supporters are aiming to raise $44,000 to go toward their airfares, accommodation, and food.
