A warm welcome to our first students of 2025

OPAIC has officially welcomed its new students for the first study block of 2025.

Today’s Orientation event featured an address by Cultural Advisor Matt Rua, who introduced students to some key Māori terms and concepts, including the Treaty of Waitangi, Waitangi Day, and karakia.

Sonny Teio, Manager of ICT, Facilities & Customer Services, shared his mihimihi, explaining its role in fostering connections.

He reflected on his own family’s journey to New Zealand, saying they had a dream, just like our new students.

Academic and Quality Lead & Te Kaihapai, Sean Bell, also shared his mihimihi, speaking about his Irish ancestry. He said he was proud to welcome students to OPAIC and his hometown, Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland).

Sean said students would gain confidence through the experiential nature of their learning, and their kaiako (lecturers) and other kaimahi (staff) would be there to support them.

He said our staff are experts in their industries as well as in teaching and would be the link between education and industry. Students would graduate ready to contribute to the global workforce.

Sean encouraged students to approach their studies with integrity and to take advantage of the many opportunities available to them.

“The opportunities are here, and we are here to help you—so make them your own.”

This week’s orientation programme also included an introduction to teams, an employability session, an academic overview, and an insurance presentation.
