Bachelor of Construction (Quantity Surveying)
Yi Zhou enjoyed her time at OPAIC so much she’s come back for more.
Yi studied the National Diploma in Quantity Surveying at OPAIC in 2016.
She interned as a Quantity Surveyor with Maltbys while studying and secured a full-time job there after she finished her course.
After working in the industry for more than a year, Yi realised she would benefit from further study.
Now she’s completing a Bachelor of Construction (Quantity Surveying) while continuing to work part-time for Maltbys. She started her bachelor's degree last August. It will take just one year to complete, since she already has her diploma.
Yi decided to study Quantity Surveying at OPAIC because she’d always wanted to specialise in a professional field and was interested in building and construction. She wanted to come to an English speaking country because she’d studied the language and thought it was a good skill to develop.
She says OPAIC’s courses are very practical and she’s been able to apply the lessons she’s learned to the workplace.
She’s particularly enjoying her Property Investment and Construction Business Management courses.
“I find those two are very interesting because it’s very close to reality. You have a better idea and knowledge about the building industry in New Zealand.”
The Bachelor’s degree is teaching her how to think at a higher level and giving her lots of new ideas, she says.
“They teach you how to think…I think that’s really important because that can facilitate you to go further in your career.”
Yi says the teachers here at OPAIC are very dedicated and staff are understanding of the fact that many students speak English as a second language.
Her favourite part of Auckland is driving along Tamaki Drive listening to her music.
“I think it’s just so beautiful.”
She also enjoys hanging out with the good friends she’s made here and enjoys the work-life balance in New Zealand.
